MckLinky Monday ~ Friends

A true friend is someone who thinks that you are a good egg even though he knows that you are slightly cracked."
 -- Bernard Meltzer.

What are the top 5 qualities that are most important in your friendships?

I don't know about you, but my friends make my life complete. Behind God and my family my friends are the most important people in my life. They encourage and rejuvenate me to be a better wife and mother.

Here are the qualities I look for in a friend:

Loyalty ~ When I think of loyalty, I think of the word "confidant." The dictionary defines confidant as a close friend to whom secrets are confided or with whom private matters or problems are discussed. My closest friends definitely fit that bill.

Cheerful ~ I have the type of personality that allows me to be able to talk with just about anyone. I count this a true blessing. I am also the type of person who can laugh at myself. I do quite often. My friends also possess this quality. We find humor in the everyday things. We can laugh with each other and even at each other without feelings being hurt.

Open ~ This is where I think some women get hung up. I see lots of women who don't have close, genuine friends and I believe it's because they put up a wall around themselves and never let anyone really know them.  I know for me personally when a woman really reveals herself to me and allows me to see her weaknesses and strengths it draws me to her.

There's not much that bugs me more than a person who tries to portray themselves as perfect. You know those women don't you? The ones that have the perfect children, the perfect spouse, the perfect house, blah, blah, blah. I'm convinced those women are A.) being spanked frequently with a bullwhip in the bedroom or B.) too insecure to admit they might have a flaw. And, we ALL know there is no such thing as the perfect ANYTHING!

Straight-forward ~ This is another quality I find extremely important. Be HONEST! Don't be secretive with your friends. Say what you mean and mean what you say! There should be no need for excuses. Women tend to be catty, jealous, insecure, vindictive, passive-aggressive, secretive... shall I go on? I see this frequently with my 12 year-old-daughter and her friends. Sadly, there are some women who never move past this. It's hurtful to all involved, plain and simple.

Don't act like everything is fine if it isn't. Remember, that if they are really your friend/confidant then they already know when something isn't right.

Fun ~ Fun and cheerful kind of go hand-in-hand. I have TONS of fun with my friends. There is nothing more freeing than hanging out with JUST girlfriends and being ridiculously silly. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE hanging out with my husband and with other couples. I truly enjoy spending time with him. He's funny and just down right FuN! But, there is something about spending time with my girlfriends, away from my spouse, that rejuvenates me.

I'm pretty sure I know what it is.... gab time! Yes, we women love to talk. Men, not so much. It's almost a way to release tension in my life when I can just talk to my friends. We NEVER run out of things to say. And it's just not that way with my husband. We talk, don't get me wrong, but because we have been together over 17 years we know most everything about each other. Literally we can catch up on the day's events in 20 minutes. The poor guy works all day and likes to come in and eat, visit with the kids and then chill out in his chair in front of the boob-tube. He really could care less about some of the random crap I talk to him about. He really tries to show interest, I give him credit for that. One thing he does for me is brings me back to reality when I get a little too dramatic. See? I have no problem admitting I have a flaw. =)

The best quote about how to have a friend is by Ralph Waldo Emerson:
"The only way to have a friend is to be one."
